Call for Papers for a Special Issue of The Hemingway Review
The Hemingway Society welcomes proposals for papers to be delivered at the 36th American Literature Association conference to be held May 21-24, 2025 in Boston.
Presenters who would like to submit their work for potential inclusion in the post-conference collection should email proposals of 500 words by 30 August 2024 to the editors Verna Kale (vlk123@psu.edu), Alberto Lena (alena_ord@yahoo.co.uk) and Iñaki Sagarna (inakisagarna@gmail.com). We will consider revised conference papers as well as new work in progress inspired by the conference. Acceptances will be sent out in September, with revised essays by 15 February 2025.
Participants are invited to get to know the people, places, cuisine, and culture of contemporary Euskal Herria—the Basque Country as it is called in the Basque language.
American writer Ernest Hemingway lived in and visited many places. While much has been written about the author’s exploits in Paris, Key West, Cuba, Spain, Italy, and Michigan, there has yet to be a full treatment of Hemingway’s connection to the American West. Starting in 1928, and lasting until his death in 1961, Hemingway traveled out West to what he called “good country”.
This special issue of The Hemingway Review aims to deepen the conversation about Hemingway, Blackness, and Whiteness. Recognizing Hemingway was taught and expected to perform White Supremacy and Privilege, we call on scholars to demonstrate ways to identify and make meaning of racism and anti-racism in Hemingway’s work. What can we learn from Hemingway about the performance of Whiteness and what use is that knowledge? How have Black writers engaged Hemingway, both in his lifetime and later?
Presentations and panels on all aspects of Hemingway Studies are welcome.
