The Hemingway Society Welcomes Preliminary Site Proposals for 2028 Conference

The executive board of the Hemingway Society welcomes preliminary proposals from teams who wish to host our 2028 international conference.  Please share this call widely with your professional networks. (Please note: This is a call for proposals to organize the next conference. Please do not send individual paper or panel proposals at this time).

Teams wishing to be considered should submit to Hemingway Society President Verna Kale (vlk123@psu.edu) a letter of interest that includes the following information:

  • Introductory statement describing why you wish to organize the next Hemingway Society conference.
  • Proposed location and (if applicable) relevance of that location to Hemingway's life and work.
    • NOTE: Though the Society has in the past alternated its biennial conference locations between sites located in North American and Europe, this is not an official policy, and we will consider proposals for any location. We are also open to considering sites outside of Hemingway’s own itineraries. The connection to Hemingway might be thematic rather than biographical.
  • Conference theme and possible plenary sessions. Topics that promote interdisciplinary scholarship and that appeal to a wide audience with diverse interests are especially encouraged.
  • Dates
    • NOTE: Conferences typically take place over a period of 5-7 days during the summer months to fit the North American academic calendar, but this is not an official policy. Your proposed dates should take climate, academic calendars, and major events (holidays, other conferences, other events being hosted in that location etc.) into consideration.
  • Description of the conference site, including possible conference facilities, lodging, dining, special events, and excursions
  • A brief bio for each member of the proposed conference team. The team should include a local site director and an academic program director.
    • NOTE: If your proposal is selected, a member of the Hemingway Society executive board will be appointed to serve as a conference co-director, together with the directors selected by the proposing team.

Important Dates:

Letters of interest are due April 1.  Teams whose initial proposals are selected by the board to advance to the next stage will be notified by April 15 and will be invited to consult with the board to discuss timelines, budget, program requirements, and other expectations.

Teams will be asked to submit their expanded proposal, including a detailed budget, by June 1.  The board will notify finalists by June 15.

Finalists will present a slide deck of their conference proposal to the membership in a 5-10 minute presentation at the Business Meeting at the Toronto Conference (July 20-25), followed by Q&A.  All Society members will be invited via email to provide feedback on the proposals.  The executive board will consider feedback by the membership and will select the conference site. The 2028 Conference site will be announced by August 30
