HEMINGWAY IN WYOMING AND MONTANA
*** POSTPONED AGAIN *** Until JULY 2022

THE HEMINGWAY SOCIETY
CONFERENCES AND VIRTUAL EVENTS

Dear Hemingway Society Friends,

Many thanks to everyone who responded to our recent survey of participants for our upcoming Wyoming/Montana conference.  Last week our board of directors met to review the survey data with conference director Larry Grimes.  In light of the data and in light of the difficulties of planning a conference in such an uncertain environment and with so many institutional partners still closed, we agreed to postpone the Wyoming/Montana Conference, for a second time, until July 2022.

This was not an easy decision, but we are confident that this is the best way for us to provide Society members with the kind of outstanding conference experience they have come to expect from us.  By the summer of 2022, we hope the pandemic will be a memory, and we hope some degree of certainty will be returning to university travel budgets.  In the meanwhile, we thank you for your understanding and patience.

This decision has led us, in turn, to postpone our next European conference until 2024.  Many thanks to everyone who weighed in this summer on the site proposals for Genoa/Rapallo and San Sebastian/Bilbao.  There is broad and enthusiastic support for both sites, and the board plans to do further research before making a selection.

While we eagerly await these conferences, the Society’s Media Committee is making sure that we have plenty of programming to bring us together.  The Committee is currently planning a virtual Hemingway Holiday Party for Friday, December 18, 8:00pm EST.  It promises to be a lot of fun, and the Committee is planning an impressive program of online events for the spring and summer of 2021 as well.  Look for further announcements over the next few months.

Looking forward to being together virtually soon and in person in 2022, and wishing everyone good health,

Carl

"Hemingway in Wyoming and Montana" Conference Postponed until 2021

It is with a heavy heart, but with great optimism for the future, that the Board of the Hemingway Foundation and Society announces the postponement of the Hemingway in Wyoming and Montana Conference until July 18-24, 2021 (circumstances permitting). This is necessary to safeguard the health of our members and do our part to slow the spread of COVID-19. As we work on this postponement, we would like members to bear in mind the following:

  • Within the next 30 days, we will be refunding fees paid to the Society for the conference
  • If you signed up for the Old West Chuck Wagon dinner, please cancel your reservation by calling 307-344-7311, since this event was booked through Yellowstone National Park Lodges and not directly through the Hemingway Society.
  • To cancel the bus from Billings to Sheridan and back, please contact debi.isakson@hemingwaysociety.org.
  • Please be sure to cancel your travel plans, including hotel, Airbnb, or Vrbo reservations, as soon as possible, since this may allow these hospitality providers, who are currently experiencing economic distress, to rent these accommodations to other vacationers.
  • Papers already accepted will be automatically accepted for the conference at its new date. We expect to issue a new call for papers early in 2021, at which time we will ask you to confirm your intent to participate. You will not be required to submit a new proposal.

This postponement will not affect our traditional semi-annual cycle of conferences. After the 2021 Wyoming/Montana conference, we fully intend to hold a conference in 2022 and return to a pattern of holding conferences in even-numbered years. We are still welcoming site proposals for 2022: please direct proposals to ebycp@appstate.edu.

For their excellent planning and hard work, the Board wants to thank Wyoming/Montana Conference Director Larry Grimes and the conference committee: Co-Directors Debi Isakson, John Sutton, and Chris Warren, and committee members Ross Tangedal, Ryan Hediger, Shannon Smith and Cecil Ponder. We also want to thank the villages of Cooke City, Montana, the town of Sheridan, and Sheridan College, who have worked to plan this conference. We eagerly look forward to it at its new date.
