11th Annual Ernest Hemingway Colloquium and Tour in Cuba This event is sponsored by the Ernest Hemingway Museum at Finca Vigia in coordination with the Hemingway Department of the Jose Marti Journalism International Institute. The objective of the colloquium is to exchange ideas and experiences with specialists and institutions and to discuss recent studies about the writer’s life and work. The event will also celebrate the 70th anniversary of Death in the Afternoon, the 60th anniversary of To Have and to Have and the 45th anniversary of the Ernest Hemingway Museum Foundation. Tuesday, June 19 - Travel from Cancun to Havana. Traditional Cuban dinner under a thatched roof at El Aljibe restaurant. Wednesday, June 20 - Participants will take a city tour, which includes a brief history of the island and important sites throughout Old Havana. This includes the Plaza de la Revolucion and a craft market, where participants will meet local Cuban artists. After lunch participants will visit the Cohiba cigar factory and the Havana Club rum factory. Breakfast at the hotel, lunch at La Bodeguita Del Medio, a Hemingway haunt in Old Havana. Dinner in old Havana. Thursday, June 21 –Colloquium begins. After dinner participants will attend the CaŇonazo ceremony. Nightly at 9:00 sharp a cannon is fired on the harbor side of La CabaŇa Fortress by a squad attired in 19th Century uniforms. Hundreds of Cubans from all walks of life gather at the Fortress every night to experience this event, a holdover from Spanish times when the shot signaled that the city gates were about to close. Breakfast at the hotel, lunch in Las Terrazas, dinner in Old Havana. Friday, June 22 – Colloquium activities. Breakfast at the hotel. Lunch and dinner in Old Havana. Saturday, June 23 - Colloquium activities. Breakfast at the hotel. Lunch in Old Havana. Dinner and cabaret show (optional) at the Hotel Nacional, listed in the book, “1000 Things to See Before You Die.” Sunday, June 24 – Last day of Colloquium. Breakfast at the hotel. Lunch and dinner in Old Havana. Monday, June 25 – Participants return to Cancun.
